Designing New Construction

Deciding to build a new home is an exiting adventure that might feel daunting! If you’ve decided new construction is the route you want to go, but don’t know which direction you want to take it — this post is for you!

After deciding which location you want to build, find a local realtor! *(hit me up if you live near the Twin Cities!) Realtors are the ones that represent your interests during the build process — your advocate! Keep in mind, most builders expect you to be working with a real estate agent.

Once you’ve picked your builder — you will either choose options the builder has picked out, work with a designer to pick out everything, or pick out everything on your own.

If you are either working with a designer or picking things out on your own, start the process as soon as you are waiting for permits. Go room by room, deciding what your family needs — including furniture! You might be able to fit that king sized bed in your guest room if you know you want it, but you need to figure that out well before the drywalling process begins. Think about where you want outlets and sconces (which also depends on furniture). Do you want a special niche for kitchen spices built into your hood range in the kitchen? You’ll have to decide this fairly quickly!

The biggest piece of advice I have is to plan out the design of your home as specifically as you can as soon as you can. Marked by Home works together with builders to create homes that are a true reflection of who lives there.
